Good Morning!

So I am ready surprisingly early for work today so I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to give an update...sorry its been a while but last week the park was crazy busy for the holiday and I was just exhausted every night. But most of those people have gone home and now it is slowing down again which is nice. I feel a little apprehensive like its the calm before the Christmas storm but I will certainly take it. Speaking of Christmas I now have the 2 week lull to try to see all the Christmas stuff in the parks that I've never seen before! Number one on my list are the Santa stories in each country at EPCOT. Apparently most, if not all, of the countries have story time each day where they have someone tell the story of Santa from that country. I saw it on the HGTV Disney Christmas special (yes I'm a Disney nerd who watched the show even though I work here) and was fascinated! I also want to see the candlelight processional since I've never seen it before and I want to go gawk at all the beautiful gingerbread creations that are up all around property. But for now I must go to work and plug on through another day...luckily only 4 more days until I'm headed to Tampa to watch my tigers squish some bugs!!!! Love to you all!

New week...

So I only got a one day weekend this week since I had 3 days last week for being in Clemson but at least it was Saturday so I got to watch my Tigers beat up on NC State and move that much closer to going to Tampa! But it was back to work as usual today. At least the weather is nice. It was a high of like 79 today with 0% humidity so pretty much perfect. I was my least favorite letter in the rotation but other than that the day went by pretty easily...no super cute kid stories to tell but I did sing the monkey vs. apes song to a family today. We talk about our Siamangs being apes not monkeys because they dont have tails and recently I found out that Veggie Tales has a song about it which now regularly gets stuck in my head. I suggest you look it up on YouTube...just search veggie tales monkey song! Everything in our park switched to Christmas last Friday I guess so there are decorations, Mickey's Jingle Jungle Parade and Christmas music in camp. I haven't decided which is worse, having the monkey song in my head or the Christmas hippopotamus song. Well got to go, I'm actually cooking dinner for myself tonight and its ready! Love to you all!

The blog is back!

So sorry everyone...you know how it is, life got busy and habits got broken but I promise to try to keep up better from now on. So today was my first day back from my weekend in Clemson! Hooray for a tiger win over FSU! This morning I had an interview for another internship that would last from January to June. Its with the same department but not the same job. I think the interview went well so hopefully that will be an option when this is over. I am still waiting to hear about school but that could be anytime between now and March if not later so I figured I'd better work on some options. It was a good day at work. The weather was nice. Its finally cooled off some but it was really windy today probably because of the storm in the Gulf. They say its supposed to make landfall tomorrow so we may get some rain but probably nothing major. Nothing particularly interesting happened with work today. Park attendance is somewhat down since we are in-between holidays which makes for a pretty easy going day. Tomorrow night is the first lighting of the castle lights as well as the first night for the Mickey's Very Merry Christmas parties. That's right, Christmas, all the other parks have their trees up and decorations slowly trickling out except ours. I think our jungle like theming doesn't lend itself as easily to the switch so we dont get as many decorations in general. I hope to go see the lights soon but everyone has been switching schedules around so much that I dont know when we will be able to get a group together to go. If I go I'll try to get some pictures posted somewhere though...it really is very pretty! Alright I suppose that's all for now! Hope everyone enjoys this and I'll update again soon!

Second Monday...

So since today is my normal "Monday" it was kind of like my 2nd monday for the week. but as far as mondays go it really wasn't that bad. At the end of the day I got to give Rafiki stamps (meaning a completed stamp card from all 6 kdcs) and the Kids Discovery Club membership pledge to two different families that I had given the first stamp of the day to, which is always neat to be the one to start and end their day. Also our team was complemented twice today to me by guests at how good we are and how much their kids learned today which is always nice to be recognized and feel like we really are teaching kids about something important instead of them just blindly spending the day at a theme park riding rides and eating mickey heads. The only other things going on right now are the fact that I have to start working on re-applying for school as well as getting ready to apply for another disney internship. Luckily there is the potential for doing both since the internships are 6 months and schools start in May or August. I suppose we shall see! Well that's all for now!

to catch everyone up!

Hello everyone! sorry its been so long since my last post. Life got pretty busy and I've been really exhausted when I got home, well come to find out it was because my body was fighting illness. I got sick this week, no worries just a cold, but it has taken a lot out of me. Playing with kids all day exposes you to a lot of germs I guess. Oh well hopefully I will get better by tomorrow though because this week I had Thur/Fri off because I switched with Dessa so that she could go home for her grandfather's birthday.
Work has been good though. About the same everyday except this past Wednesday. Every year the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) chooses an animal that is in need to "celebrate" and try to educate people about. And since DAK is both AZA and WAZA accredited, we got to participate in the celebration. This year we are celebrating the Year of the Gorilla and Wednesday was the day we chose to really do some real gorilla education. Four of the twenty presenters were chosen to work a table at conservation station that included getting kids involved in putting together a puzzle that showed pictures of things they could do to help animals like gorillas, and I was one of those who were chosen. It was really cool because it was something different from what I do everyday and also it was pretty exciting to me because it is an activity that they actually do with kids in an orphanage in the Democratic Republic of Congo near where the mountain gorillas live that Dian Fossey studied.
Well that's about all from me for now. I'm just trying to get well so that I can get back out there perky and smiling and enjoying Disney Magic!

DAK Fun Fact --> there are 4 different subspecies of gorillas and all 8 of the gorillas at DAK are western lowland gorillas! They are separated into 2 troups, the family troup consisting of the large silverback male and 4 females, and the bachelor group of 4 boys. Another day

It was another day at work with nothing terribly exciting happening. No ducks to save or crying to avoid. I had to give the Harambe presentation today which meant that I got to go to the lovely conservation station for 2 hours as well. It rained again today but only for about 20-30 minutes and it didn't cool anything down. As a matter of fact it was steamy, hot and humid all day long. :( We are having our first mentor meetings this week which is pretty exciting. We are divided between the 4 core team members into mentor groups that meet once a month or so. Its just a way for us to all meet up and talk about any questions we have or anything going on with our lives or in the world of Disney. Thats about it here.

DAK fun fact --> Disney's Worldwide Conservation fund has been established and giving out grants since 1998 when DAK opened and has awarded more than 12 million dollars in 110 different countries to date! You can best support DWCF by donating and receiving a button at many different Disney park and resort locations. 100% of your donation goes directly to our conservation projects, while Disney covers all administrative costs!

Monday, Monday...I mean Sunday!

So it was back to work today after a lazy weekend of laying out on my new pool float getting sunburned. It monsooned here today...major rain and lightening which meant that almost all of the attractions were shut down. The most exciting part about today was helping a hurt duck. A family stopped me while I was walking to the gibbons and asked me if I was there to help the bird. I smiled politely and asked what bird? lol they showed me the duck that was on the side of the path who had a hurt wing or leg and so I called it in to pest control and gentley shooed the duck into the bushes so that no one would step on it or try to catch/touch/pet/etc...(ps people are dumb!) but of course as I was in the process of helping the duck into the bushes then came the downpour so I end up rather wet. However, I think some of my fellow presenters had a more exciting day with a little baby alligator who showed up in the Siamangs moat. Needless to say it was a big day for pest control! Also, today we had our monthly morning meeting with a member of the primate keeper team. Since we do staff Siamangs and Gibbons they come to give us updates. Basically the big news is that the older Gibbon daughter is starting her color change from black to blonde and should be finished in about a month.
-sidenote: all baby white cheeked gibbons are born a pretty blonde color, when they reach about 7-8 months they all turn black and then at about 8 years the females change back to blonde because they have reached sexual maturity.
So its really exciting that our girl is changing because it is proving natural behaviors and it means that soon she will be able to take off to whereever there may be a mate for her and she can start a family of her own! I guess that's all for tonight! Hope everyone is well!

new picture!

I know there have been some requests for a picture of me in costume so check out my new profile picture! That's me in action during the morning lineup, teaching kids about the importance of tarantulas and spiders in our world! :)

Sorry!

Sorry its been so long since the last post! I promise to get better at this blogging thing! Well in the last week nothing terribly exciting has happened. I did have my regular two days off on Friday and Saturday and spent Friday wedding dress shopping with my friend Becky and she found a beautiful gown! Saturday I just spent lounging around and getting things done here at the house and it was my night to cook so I made tacos. Today is Tuesday so it feels like Wednesday for me. It was one of those long days. Possibly made longer because a group of the interns all went out to Hollywood Studios and stayed til 11 but who knows?! ;) Today I had two cute "magical moments" at work. First I was walking from Africa to Asia and I happened to see a little girl trip and fall. She was maybe 4 so I went over to her and asked if they needed to find a way to a band-aid and checked out the knee for her. She wasn't bleeding but you could tell the tears were bubbling inside just about to spill over and then I remembered I had an DAK butterfly tattoo in one of my vest pockets so I whipped it out and got her to smile and totally avoided the crying! The second moment was when I was at Camp Minnie Mickey I was helping a little boy who was beyond adorable and he was maybe 3 and I suggested that we got to the other end of the log (because at that KDC you reach your hands into 4 different holes in a log and try to get what each thing is) and when we started to walk down to the other end of the log he just reached up and held my hand and it was super cute and just made my day!! Other than that it was really hot today but it didn't rain. I guess that's mostly a good thing.

DAK Fun Fact--> there are 103,000 leaves on the tree of life in 5 different shades of green and they are made out of a material flexible enough for them to actually blow in the wind!

Also in DAK news, you may or may not have heard about the baby rhino that was born recently in Uganda but it is actually the first baby rhino to be born there in decades which is a major step for conservation of these animals! However, this baby also has ties to DAK because the mother was actually donated to the sanctuary it was born in from here in 2006. Both mom and baby are doing well as far as we have heard!

Hump day!

So I'm 3 days into this work week and feeling a little tired but pretty good. Today I got to work parade again which was really exciting! I just love being able to walk around and talk to people without worrying about teaching them anything or giving a conservation message...not that I don't love that aspect of my job because I do and I also think its really important, its just nice to take a break sometimes. I also love parade because watching little kids see their favorite character come dancing down the street just makes my day!

Today was also an interesting day because I got to see first-hand some of the mating behavior of our siamangs. lol We had been warned that it would happen and that it would happen right in front of guests for everyone to see but no matter how prepared they try to make us it is still an awkward situation. But no worries, I had a little girl tell me that the "mommy and daddy monkeys were kissing" haha and if that works for her and her parents that works for me! Other than that it was a pretty good day...I made a new friend, a little girl who turned 4 today and talked to me for like 10 minutes about all the animal noises she knew and how lions were bad and how at rainforest cafe the thunder and lightening comes! she was adorable!

The only bad thing about today was it was hot! really, really hot! I will be glad for october when the days are much more bareable. Only 2 more days until my weekend!

DAK fun fact...Animal Kingdom has the largest herd of Nile hippos in the Western Hemisphere (and as you ride Kilamanjaro Safari they are separated by sex, boys on the right and girls on the left!)

Week Update...

So I'm very sorry it has been so long since my last update. The fam was here last weekend so when I wasn't working we were out playing in the parks which was very fun! This week I worked Sunday through Thursday. I have not gotten to do parade again yet. They are trying to rotate it so that everyone gets a chance and gets trained. However I did get to do my Harambe School presentation, which was one of the scripts I had to learn, and even did it while my family was still in town so they were there to watch. It went much better than expected. For whatever reason I can talk to thousands of strangers a day and have no fear but you give me a mic and the butterflies start flying, but at least its over for a while. It has rained a lot here this week and its the week after a holiday so crowds have been a little lower. Other than that nothing terribly exciting has happened...I'm just enjoying the life of a Disney cast member, although my voice and feet are still adjusting! Now I have the next two days off and hope to enjoy it being lazy, maybe catching a movie with some friends and getting my errands run!

On another note, I'm sure you have all heard about the tragedy of the monorail accident. Unfortunately we did lose a cast member who was only 21 years old. The whole Disney company is very sad and I'm sure that the monorail and its employees are being thoroughly examined and retrained to make sure no one else is ever hurt.

Now that the sad note is over, here is your DAK fun fact --> Our elephant herd at Disney's Animal Kingdom park produces over a ton of manure a day which we recycle and use as fertilizer all over Walt Disney World!

Friday

So Friday was the last day I had working as any kind of group. It went really well...except for a kid pulling our rubber catepillar off of the tree at conservation station...lol Other than that nothing terribly exciting happened. It was hot but that's normal. My family got here sometime between 4 and 5 so they were waiting for me when I got off. I was very excited to see everyone including Layla. I think it may take some adjustment for her and we are still working out all the kinks on where she is going to stay while I'm gone during the day. hopefully she will get used to it soon though. We had dinner at Bahama Breeze and then went to Downtown Disney for a bit. We bought tickets for the family and browsed World of Disney. Today we have already hit the parks for a while then we came back to the apartment to check on the pup and rest a while and we are headed back out for dinner, shows and of course fireworks!! More updates soon!

Also get excited I will soon be starting Animal Kingdom fun fact of the day so be on the lookout for that!

oh one last thing...yes Mrs. Collins--our SUE replica is the an exact copy of the well-known fossil on exhibit at the Field Museum in Chicago. When it was auctioned off 3 different groups split the cost, the Field Museum, Disney, and McDonalds!

On my own...almost

Hey yall! Sorry its been so long since my last update. I had the weekend off so I spent Sat roaming around Animal Kingdom mostly to help myself get my bearings since during training we kept going back and forth on-stage and off-stage. On Sunday I spent most of the day learning my script about SUE the dinosaur and laid out by the pool a bit. Monday was our last day of classroom training which everyone was pretty excited about because we were all ready to just get out there and see how it all goes. So starting Tuesday we were out in the park working KDCs all day. Tuesday and Wednesday were "shadow days" which just meant that we worked in groups of 5 with a core team member who was there as kind of a safety net for any questions or issues we might have had. Those days went really well and I got more high-fives in two days from little kids than possibly ever in my life! lol Today and tomorrow are paired days. So we still have a bit of a safety net but its another intern instead of a seasoned presenter. So today I was letter C and that meant that one of my stations was parade! it was really fun...I got to interact with people and not have to worry about conservation messages! lol and here's an insider tip--the parade at DAK starts in Africa then travels in a circle around Discovery Island and then ends again in Africa so if you want a really good viewing area go to Africa after the parade has been through the first time and all the people have cleared out! We have one more day of pairs tomorrow and then I have the 4th off and then starting Sunday I will be on my own! I'm pretty excited! I'll try to be more regular about updating this from now on!

one week down

so I have finished my first full week with the Walt Disney Company! hooray! today we had to be in early so that we could do check outs on our first script on stage with the mics before guests got into the park. I passed! :) so now I get to move on to the next one for Monday. We didn't do anything terribly exciting today except get to see the remaining 3 KDCs that we hadn't already been to on Wednesday. These were the Dinoland, Camp Minnie Mickey, and Tree of Life KDCs. We also got rained on which I suppose I'm going to have to get used to here in Florida seeing as how it rains almost every day. The most exciting part about today was that I found out that after next week my regular days off will be Fridays and Saturdays which I'm pretty pumped about since those were my first choices! We have the next two days off so I think some of the interns, mostly the girls, are going out tonight since this will be one of the last times we will all have off together! Next week we will have 2 shadow days where we will work in small groups out in the parks and 2 days of pairs and then the week after we are on our own for good. I'm kind of nervous but pretty excited to get out there and interact with guests too! Have a great weekend everyone!

Wednesday

Today was a really fun day! This morning we got to see 3 of the KDCs in action and actually open the boxes, see all the props and get a better idea of exactly what we will do there. We saw the Conservation Station one, the one in Asia and the one in Africa. Then in the afternoon we got trained for our section of the parade route and actually got to watch the parade and then we went to see the Festival of the Lion King show! sometimes it amazes me that they are paying me to do these things! :) Luckily we have a day off tomorrow so I will be running some errands and possibly playing in the parks some but mostly I will be working on memorizing my scripts that I have to know by Friday! Sorry this is short but I am in the process of getting ready to head to EPCOT to meet up with some of the other interns for dinner and some fireworks!

PS--I have had more than one comment about pin trading. We will definitely be able to participate in pin trading, I'm not really sure where it came out that we couldn't. The only times that we are not allowed to have pins on us is when we are dealing with the animals in the showboxes for the safety of those animals. (hard to balance a bug and trade pins with three eager children at the same time!) So that's what's up with that!

Tuesday

Just got home from another day of training. Although today was way more fun! It was mostly based on learning content about some of our animals that we will be teaching about and we toured Dinoland today. There are 3 positions that we could and will be working in Dinoland which are the KDC there, in front of the American Crocodile, and giving a presentation at SUE, the T-rex. And because SUE is so close to the Dinosaur ride we all got to head on over and test it out too! Just for the sake of research of course! :) because we have to remember that time travel is dark, loud, bumpy and sometimes things jump out at you so it may not be suitable for all children. We also got to see our presenter trailer where we will start and end every day which is backstage near the main gate. In the afternoon the invertabrate keeper team came in to give us lots of information and show us some of the bugs, spiders, tarantulas, and snakes that we will be working with everyday. It was very neat, although I have to say that the hissing cockroach is probably never going to be my favorite animal. Tomorrow we are scheduled to do classroom work in the morning and then we are out in the park exploring three more of our KDCs to kind of get a feel for what we will be working with there! Hope everyone is enjoying this daily update and if you have any specific questions about what all the presenter team has going on or anything here at Disney feel free to post those!

Monday!

So its the end of Monday and I've got to say I'm not quite as tired as I was yesterday. I hope that means that I'm adapting to the working girl lifestyle quickly. :) Today was our first day of on the job training. It was also the first day of costumes! That's right we we all looking awesome sporting our pleated shorts, hiking books, and safari vests all day long! but at least they were more comfortable than business attire in the 107 degree weather. We spent most of the day in the classroom learning technical stuff but we did head out into the park a little bit and got to see a bunch of the KDCs (kids discover clubs) and animal positions where we will be giving presentations and interacting with guests. We also got to see the bird show which I haven't seen in a long time and it is definitely a great place to sit down and take a breather in the shade if anyone is every at DAK looking for this kind of relief! That's basically all that happened. Tomorrow is another 8-5 day of training and I believe it will be even more classroom work than what we did today which is kind of a bummer but they promise us we will get to go out and see the parade one day this week! Maybe it will be tomorrow! here's hoping...

Day 2 and 3!

Hey all! sorry I didn't update yesterday but I'll fill you in: Yesterday morning we had Traditions which is a 4 hour training class that Disney has for all of its new employees that basically outlines all the history of the company up to date and emphasizes that the beliefs that Walt Disney himself developed however many years ago are still practiced here today and that's what makes the "Disney Difference". Then after that we had lunch and then met up with Nadine (my boss) who took us to a room with computers where we learned how to log into the Hub which is Disney's intranet system and also we learned how to put in our hours so that we get paid. Very important!! lol! so after everyone was finished with that we all headed over from Disney University where we were which is behind the Magic Kingdom over to costuming at DAK (Disney's Animal Kingdom) to get fitted for costumes! they are stunning let me tell you...not...but there are costumes that could be worse. I checked out 5 shorts and 5 shirts and my vest, belt and rain gear which we keep in a fanny pack (go ahead rebecca you can laugh at me its ok!)
Today was our DAKlimations training which started at 8 this morning with a 3 hour walking tour of the park. We saw basically everything there is to see and even got to sit in on a showing of "Its tough to be a bug". Then we had lunch in the cafeteria which was pretty good food although a little pricey so I'm planning on taking my lunch pretty often to save some bucks. After that we headed over to the safari where we interns got our own safari truck with an animal keeper who told us all about the animals we saw. Then it was off to the classroom where we had another 4 hour class which was basically about guest interaction and creating the magic! It was pretty interesting but made for a long day. Although I cant complain too much because after it was all said and done they gave us each 2 fastpasses for Expedition Everest which made for a great way to end any day at Disney.
Now that I have my ID I'm hoping to get some people together to hit the parks one night especially for some fireworks some where. We are off Thursday, Saturday and Sunday this week so maybe one of those days if I'm not too exhausted. Well that's all for now...on the job training starts tomorrow from 8-5!

first day!

So my first day is over and done with! It really wasn't too bad or overwhelming. I started with paperwork at 11:30 and was done by about noon. Then I went back to the apartment and met up with Dessa and her mom and we turned around and left again to meet with our managers at 1:00 after we dropped off Dessa's mom across the street at Downtown Disney. Our meeting was with the 3 animal programs managers and all the animal programs interns, which includes the vet people, the seas people, animal nutrition, and us presenters. Probably around 40 people total. We did a quick icebreaker basically to get everyone to say their names, schools and hometowns. Turns out one of my managers is from Columbia, SC and went to USC and there is another intern who either goes to or just graduated from Coastal but I cant remember what her internship was. After that we went over our schedule for the upcoming week starting with Traditions tomorrow morning at 7:30!! Which is why I have to go to bed now but I will put in more updates as the week goes on! Goodnight all and I hope you have magical dreams! :)

Tomorrow!!!

Just a quick update...I'm here in Florida and tomorrow is the big day! Check in and the start of my Disney experience! Here's hoping we get an itinerary tomorrow so that we can get an idea of when and where we are supposed to be! I'll keep you all updated!

Moving Weekend!

Well the weekend went better than I had ever hoped! Mama and I went to pick up the big truck on Thursday and got it home and loaded without any major issues, so we were pretty close to ready to roll by the time Papa got home. I dropped Layla off at Lauren's because Hunter agreed to watch her this weekend (and next week while we are at Salkehatchie), so all that was left to do was get our La Bamba fix and hit the road. Went went all the way to Brunswick, GA on Thursday night so that our drive on Friday wouldn't be so bad and so that we would have time Friday afternoon to start unpacking. When we got there the lease was all drawn up and ready to sign...all 20 pages of it!! but we got the keys, the gate card, and learned how to use the alarm system and then we were ready to go. However, by this point it was raining so we hit up chic-fil-a for some late lunch and then headed back. We started by getting everything out of the truck that we brought down except the mattresses. Then it was time for Ikea!! haha however the first trip was a stressful one since we got there with only like 2 hours to get all the stuff we needed. But we did get it all, including the couch and my new bed! We put the couch together first because it was the biggest piece with the most steps and it took all 4 of us but we got it done. everything else went very smoothly! My family was such a great help and we are now all very handy with an Allen wrench! :) We were done with everything but the decorating by Saturday afternoon which of course meant another Ikea trip and a Target trip. In between there we had an interesting adventure to return the Penske truck where we got to see a side of Orlando that I will probably never visit again! When we got back we all got to take a shower and put on clean clothes and we went to dinner at the carrabas thats really close to my place. The only thing left to do on Sunday morning was hang the curtain in the living room which proved to be slightly frustrating but Mama and Papa got it done! Then it was time to hop in the Hybrid and head home. Now everything will be in place for when I get there in two weeks and I am so grateful for that! I have a wonderful family!!

And now for some pictures:

getting closer!

So its almost time to head down to Florida and move all my stuff! We have finally confirmed color schemes for both the common areas and for my bedroom. The living/dinning area is going to be a combo of kelly green and bright orange. Mama is working hard to sew the curtains and pillows and I greatly appreciate it! My room is going to be black and white with bright green accents! Its all coming together and I think we are all really excited to get my stuff moved.

I also have been searching the internet for some more info on exactly what I will be doing from day to day. Disney is notorious for not giving out much detail until you are actually down there so I hadn't found much until today. I found a girl on facebook who I will be working with and whose current roommate currently has the same internship that we will be starting in June. She gave me all the inside scoop, including the fact that we will work 8:15 am-5:15 pm every day and we get the same two days off in a row every week. I'm supposed to be thinking about which days I want off because we will put in our request our first week of training.

I think I've almost got everything purchased that I will need including my cool hiking boots and some squishy insoles to go in them. Also, I completed my professional attire with 2 pairs of trousers that I got today so I can attend any company meetings, seminars and/or classes in appropriate attire!

I guess that's all the updates I have for now but be looking for pictures of the newly decorated apartment after we return this weekend!

Not homeless anymore!

Hey all! so I think most of you may have heard but we have found an apartment! It's a two bedroom, two bath place in a complex called Cumberland Park which is brand new. It was built about 8 months ago so no one has ever even slept in our apartment yet. I also will have a roommate. Her name is Dessa, she is 23 and from Indiana. She will be doing the exact same internship as me and she has worked for Disney before in their college program. She graduated from Purdue University in December as an Elementary Ed. major. The other great thing about this apartment complex is that it is where the other girls coming down from Clemson are going to be living too so at least I know some people close. I'm starting to get really excited now that I don't have this housing thing hanging over my head. I'm gonna try to post some actual pictures later this afternoon but if anyone wants to check out the place the website is www.cumberlandparkapartments.com!

Welcome!
